Winnipeg mayoral hopefuls speak at candidates forum Tuesday

WINNIPEG – The municipal election campaign will gear up as mayoral hopefuls gather for the first all-candidates forum Tuesday evening.

The Manitoba Filipino Business Council has confirmed eight of Winnipeg’s nine mayoral candidates will take part in the forum from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Sisler High School.

Winnipeg will elect a new mayor, council and school boards on Oct. 22.

Former councillor Gord Steeves, Coun. Paula Havixbeck, former MLA and MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis and privacy lawyer Brian Bowman have held multiple campaign events through the summer. Academic and former military officer Robert-Falcon Ouellette, former provincial bureaucrat and city hall activist David Sanders, funeral home owner Michael Vogiatzakis and exotic dancer booking agent Michel Fillion have also confirmed they will be at the forum.

Hazem Aslan, a Handi Transit owner-operator who registered as a candidate Friday, is not on the list of participating candidates.

The forum, which is open to the public, will focus on topics of interest to the city’s Filipino community.

There are an estimated 56,700 Filipino people in Winnipeg, according to 2013 demographic information compiled by the city.
