EDMONTON – A spokesman for Alberta Tory leadership candidate Ted Morton says Morton used a second email address while in cabinet for privacy reasons.
Sam Armstrong says every minister has a separate internal email to communicate with colleagues and senior bureaucrats on sensitive issues.
He says Morton wasn’t trying to deceive the public.
Armstrong was reacting to a CBC story that said Morton used the email name “Frederick Lee” on internal dealings regarding policy issues when he was minister of sustainable resources.
The story alleges Morton did so to evade having his name tied to controversial decisions affecting land use and to thwart freedom of information requests.
Armstrong says Frederick Lee is part of Morton’s real name – something that was well known in the department
