Victim dies in Winnipeg texting-and-driving crash

The 53 year old man critically injured in a crash police have blamed on texting and driving, has died. Police say charges will likely be upgraded against the 19 year old suspect.

The two car collision happened on Dugald Road at Goodyear Avenue at about 8:30 pm Tuesday.

The 19 year old driving a pick up truck was eastbound on Dugald when he veered into westbound lanes to avoid traffic stopped due to construction in the area. The pickup slammed into a westbound car, driven by a 53 year old man. That driver was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he remains; the 19 year old suffered less serious injuries.

Police say distracted driving was a contributing factor, saying the 19 year old was texting while driving. Texting at the wheel is against the law in Manitoba under the Highway Traffic Act, but the 19 year old is facing far more serious criminal charges. He was initially charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm but a police spokesperson said Wednesday the charge is likely to change since the victim has died.

The 19 year old is also charged with possessing a prohibited weapon; officers wouldn’t specify what type of weapon, saying it is not related to the crash.

The names of suspect and victim were not released. The 19 year old was released on a promise to appear in court at a future date.
