MONTREAL – Following the death of a cyclist hit as she rode under an underpass, Montreal is making good on its promise to improve safety for urban bikers.

The mayor and his executive committee members in charge of public security and transport announced their short and long term plans on Wednesday.
Officials are starting off with a temporary measure to re-open sidewalks on all the city’s underpasses to cyclists.
Then, over the next two years, every underpass will be evaluated and unique, permanent solutions will be created for each one.

The city also announcing that it will spend $2.5 million over five years equipping all of 70 of its heavy trucks with lateral protective arms.
