On this day in history, September 2, 1945, Japan signed an official statement of surrender ending the Second World War.

Representatives from each allied nation were present aboard USS Missouri, which lay at anchor in Tokyo Bay.

After Germany’s surrender on May 8,1945, the Japanese Army was the only remaining Axis Power continuing to fight the allied forces.

Their surrender came just under four years after the U.S., Canada, and Great Britain declared war on Japan following the attack on Pearl Harbor.
