Stantec agrees to buy architecture, engineering firm in Yellowknife

EDMONTON – Stantec (TSX:STN) has agreed to buy FSC Architects & Engineers, based in Yellowknife, for an undisclosed amount.

The engineering firm said Thursday it signed a letter of intent to make the acquisition, which would give it a stronger presence in Northern Canada.

FSC focuses on structures in cold and remote climates and has handled projects such as the legislative assembly building in Yellowknife, the RCMP headquarters in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and airports in both the Yukon and Russia.

The company has a staff of 70 employees at offices in Yellowknife; Whitehorse, Yukon; Iqaluit; and Edmonton.

“FSC’s unique cold-weather focus will add a new element to our buildings practice and allows us to offer a complete package of environmental, scientific, engineering, and project management services to FSC’s unique client base,” said Stantec president Bob Gomes in a release.

Stantec has been on an acquisition tear in recent months, buying Minnesota-based engineering and environmental science firm Bonestroo Inc. for an undisclosed amount in July. It also acquired The Caltech Group, a Calgary company that provides engineering services to the oil and gas and utilities sectors.

“As part of Stantec, we’ll be able to offer our clients much more than our existing services,” says FSC’s chief executive Rod Savoie in a release.

“Joining Stantec also gives our employees the expanded career development opportunities that a large North American firm like Stantec can provide.”

Stantec delivers consulting services in planning, engineering, architecture, surveying, environmental sciences and project management for private and public sector clients.

The company employs 11,000 people across North America.
