One person killed in southeast motorcycle crash

CALGARY – One person was killed in a motorcycle crash in the city’s southeast industrial area on Friday.

It happened just after 8 a.m. near the intersection of Portland Street and 11th Street S.E.

Witnesses say a northbound motorcycle crashed into a truck.

“I saw a motorcycle going northbound on 11th Street S.E. and a truck was making a left turn… the truck was going southbound,” says Marc Despins.

“The motorcycle was going really, really fast,” adds Despins. “He tried to brake, couldn’t brake in time, lost control of the motorbike and hit the truck.”

“I’m still kind of shaken by it.”

EMS confirm the crash killed a man in his mid 20’s believed to be from Calgary.

It appears the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

So far, police have not said if they consider speed or alcohol factors in the collision.

Charges are pending against the driver of a five tonne truck involved, who police suspect may have been making an illegal U-turn.

The intersection was closed for about four hours while police investigated.
