GAYS RIVER, N.S. – Nova Scotia’s Environment Department says water from a popular roadside spring in Colchester County has been deemed unsafe to drink.
The department says tests have found bacteria and elevated nitrate levels in Gays River spring.
The spring is located on Highway 224 between the communities of Pine Grove and Gays River.

The tests show E. coli, which indicates recent fecal contamination.
The department says there may also be other harmful pathogens in the water.
It says people who drink water from the spring may experience stomach pains, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.
As well, it says elevated nitrate levels may pose a health risk to infants.
The government says boiling the water isn’t a treatment option as the process only increases nitrate concentration.
