Five year anniversary of Stephanie Stewart’s disappearance

Friday marked a sombre anniversary for the family of a provincial forestry worker.

It’s been five years since Stephanie Stewart mysteriously disappeared from her fire lookout tower near Hinton. The 70-year-old vanished during her morning routine as she was getting ready for her shift.

Police are still looking for tips in the case. RCMP say they have only received a few leads after all this time.

For Stewart’s family and colleagues, the hope remains that she can be found – even if there’s little hope remaining that she is still alive.

If there is any bright spot to the situation, it is that the province has stepped up security at fire lookout towers. It’s Stewart’s rather sombre legacy.

“When we look at the work these folks do for Albertans we want to make sure their safety is looked after and managed in the proper way.” Sustainable Resources Development Minister Mel Knight says.

In years past, police have offered up new information in hopes it might jog somebody’s memory about Stewart’s disappearance.

Last year, officers revealed that Stewart was in the middle of boiling water when she disappeared and blankets are missing.

This year – there is no new information to share. Just yet another plea to anyone who might be able to help solve this five year old mystery.

A $20,000.00 reward is still available to anyone who offers information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
