TORONTO – The Caribbean Carnival begins Thursday with the crowning of the King and Queen at Allan Lamport Stadium.
The stadium will become an outdoor theatre as bands and individuals compete to be named the regents of the carnival.
Road closures
But the carnival also brings with it extended road closures near the city’s lake shore.
The Gardiner Expressway will be closed at 12:30 a.m. Saturday in three locations including the eastbound exits and entrances at Jameson Avenue, as well as the westbound exit at Dunn Avenue.
Closures of Lakeshore Boulevard begin at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday and include the westbound lanes from Strachan Avenue to Parkside Drive and the eastbound lanes from Colborne Lodge to Strachan Avenue.
Dufferin Street south of Springhurst Avenue will also be closed.
TTC routes to the carnival
But the TTC is stepping up their service to help people get to and from the carnival.
The TTC will be servicing a temporary bus stop on the south side of Lakeshore Boulevard West neaer the Sunnyside Foot Bridge for express buses travelling to Keele Subway station.
Another temporary bus stop will be serviced between Dunn Avenue and Jameson Avenue on Lakeshore Boulevard West that will take commuters to the Bloor Street West subway stop.
Weekend events
The King and Queen event starts at 7 p.m. Thursday at Allan Lamport Stadium.
Jab Jab J’Ouvert is billed as a “night till morning event” at Wilson Avenue Outdoor Arena at 1677 Wilson Avenue.
But the grand parade, expected to draw thousands of onlookers, begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Exhibition Place.
