29th Apple Triathlon had record number of participants

It was an early start for triathletes competing in the 29^th Apple Triathlon this weekend.

At 7:15 a.m the first of 1,166 competitors in the Sprint and Olympic distance races hit the water at Tugboat Beach in downtown Kelowna.

Officials staggered the race starts so as to allow more room on the course for competitors.

Spectators lined the streets and cheered on family and friends throughout the day.

The Olympic distance race is a 1.4 km swim, 40 km bike followed by a 10 km run.

It was a Penticton local, Tom Evans, who took how top spot in the race with an overall race time of 1:58:31.

For the women gold went to Kelowna’s Melindi Elmore with a time of 2:12:12.

The race had a record 12 paratriathletes competing this year as well.

A number of athletes said Sunday’s race was their last warm up ahead of next weekends Ironman Triathlon.
