A British Columbia teen has chosen a unique way to arrive at his first year of university.
Adam Beaudoin has embarked on an extraordinary 4,500 km journey from Vancouver to Queens University in Kingston, ON.
The recent high school graduate is raising money to benefit the BC Cancer Foundation after two aunts and two high school classmates were diagnosed with the deadly disease.
Adam’s daily distance varies. He has ridden 200 kms in a day, but that was with over 14,000 feet of mountains to climb. His longest day so far has been 224 km, which he completed in 6 hours.
He has also encountered some dangers on his journey. When going through a particularly difficult mountain pass, he nearly fell over a guard rail when his foot clipped the side. Luckily, he was able to recover and got himself safely back on the road.
When asked how the journey is going so far, he said it’s been up and down.
“There’s challenges for sure. But there’s also rewards. The trip’s changed my life. I’ve realized that anything is possible…the human spirit’s so powerful. It’s pretty cool.”
So far, Adam has raised over $17,000 thanks to a donor who has committed five dollars per kilometer and random donations he has received along the way.
He is currently on Day 12 of his 30-day journey. He rode through Regina yesterday, and was planning to make it as far as Indian Head before stopping for the night.
