WINNIPEG – Three of the big colourful balls Assiniboine Park staff call Skittles have been stolen from the attraction’s Nature Playground.

The large round balls dot an area of the colourful, unusual playground, immortalized in the song In the Children’s Garden by popular kids’ entertainer Fred Penner.

They are quite heavy and were anchored to the ground.

“It is a bit of a mystery how and why someone might want to take them, but nevertheless, they are gone and we would love to get them back,” Laura Cabak, the park’s communications manager, said in a news release.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

A search of the park for the balls was unsuccessful so the public is being asked to watch for them and call 204-927-6000 if they’re found “so we can retrieve them and put them back where they belong in the Nature Playground for kids to enjoy,” Cabak said.

The playground – built with a child-sized gate that adults have to duck to get through – has become a popular destination for Winnipeg families and visitors.
