CITY OF SASKATOON “WHOSE JOB IS IT?” BROCHURE NOW AVAILABLE IN 14 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES
The City of Saskatoon is pleased to announce that the “Whose Job Is It?” brochure of phone numbers for commonly requested civic services is now available in 14 different languages – Arabic, S’gaw (Burmese dialect), Chinese, Farsi, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
The translated versions will help to increase access to and awareness of civic services and contacts, in addition to serving as a language tool. The brochure was translated and produced by the City of Saskatoon’s immigration initiative with funding assistance from the Provincial and Federal Governments. In the last year itself, Saskatoon has welcomed over 4,000 newcomers and projections for 2010-11 are expected to exceed 4,500. Based on data from Statistics Canada, this represents almost a 57% population growth from immigration for the Saskatoon Census Metropolitan Area (CMA). Ultimately, the goal is to help newcomers transition more easily to their surroundings and choose Saskatoon as their new home.
The brochures are available online at the City of Saskatoon website (click on “W” for “Whose Job Is It?”) and also available to be picked up at City Hall, the Newcomer Information Centre, and through some ethno-cultural groups in the community. While the brochures are in 14 languages, civic services are only available in English. For more information on distribution of the brochure, contact Smita Garg, Immigration Community Resource Coordinator at 975-8459.
