It seems it’s taken a gangland execution to secure funding for the continued operations of the RCMP’s 16 member Gang Task Force unit that’s based in Kelowna. 

 

The unit was created three years ago with three years of committed funding from the federal and provincial governments.

That funding was about to expire, and despite a year of lobbying from the City of Kelowna, the mayor says the province wasn’t promising anything.

Until Tuesday morning, when Sharon Shepherd says she got a call from the Solicitor General’s office committing more money to continue the work of the Gang Task Force in Kelowna. Shepherd believes Sunday’s high profile gang related shooting outside the Grand Hotel convinced the provincial government to open the purse strings. 

 

Meanwhile, the city continues to lobby the federal government to re-affirm its share of the cost of Kelowna’s Gang Task Force operations.
