UPDATE: Man killed after being struck south of Edmonton

EDMONTON- A man died Monday morning after being hit by a vehicle on the QE2 south of Edmonton.

At around 6 a.m., the man was attempting to cross the highway north of exit 519 in Leduc when he was fatally struck.

The victim was pronounced dead on scene and police are currently investigating.

His identity has not been released.

The driver was uninjured, but the vehicle was severely damaged.

Police say this is not a common occurrence and are unsure why the pedestrian was trying to cross the highway.

“What’s happened to this pedestrian is not something a driver would expect to see happen,” said RCMP Cst. Julian Celms.

“Drivers need to keep their eyes on the road for what’s going on around them.”

The highway was closed for three and a half hours, but were later reopened.
