ACTON VALE, Que. – Quebec police are investigating after a small-town mayor reportedly dumped a gigantic boulder onto the lawn of his ex-wife in a less-than-happy birthday present.

The mayor of St-Theodore-d’Acton, east of Montreal, told a local newspaper he left her the 20-ton stone as a gift.

Dany Lariviere joked that his wife had always wanted a big rock; he quipped that this one was between 18 and 24 “carat-tons.”

Lariviere’s ex-wife, Isabelle Prevost, called police to file a complaint after discovering the delivery Sunday morning.

The boulder is topped with a pink ribbon and covered in a spray-painted message: “Happy birthday, Isa.”

Police say they’ve asked the responsible party to remove the gargantuan gag.

Apparently, he was reluctant to comply.

“(The individual) didn’t want to move it after the woman filed a complaint with Quebec provincial police,” said police spokesperson Sgt. Valerie Bolduc.

Now police are considering laying charges of harassment or mischief, as well as possible highway-code violations, Bolduc said.

The parents of Lariviere’s ex-wife described the incident as “disgusting” and her mother told The Canadian Press that their daughter was too upset to grant an interview.

In his own interview with a local newspaper, Lariviere boasted that police stopped him as he transported the boulder with a front-end loader.

“They checked my papers, everything was in order, and they followed me and helped me at the scene,” he told La Voix de L’Est.

Lariviere said he spent a substantial amount of money during the divorce in order to share custody of their children.
