Second phase of rapid transit gets green light from city hall

WINNIPEG — After much debate, the second phase of rapid transit will go ahead.

City council voted 9-6 in favour of the $590-million extension to the University of Manitoba. St. Boniface Coun. Dan Vandal was absent.

“We need this phase of rapid transit,” said Mynarski Coun. Ross Eadie. “We really need it.”

The issue divided council.

“I do not support the route chosen,” said River Heights Coun. John Orlikow. “I do not support the lack of council oversight.”

A motion brought forward by North Kildonan Coun. Jeff Browaty for a non-binding referendum on the project failed to gain any ground.

His only supporter was outgoing St. James Coun. Scott Fielding.
