Woman sexually assaulted in Braeside home invasion

CALGARY – Police are investigating the sexual assault of a young woman in the community of Braeside on Tuesday.

Police say an unknown man entered a home in the 600 block of Brookpark Drive S.W. around 4 a.m., and walked into the victim’s bedroom.

She awoke to find him standing over top of her, at which point he began sexually assaulting her. The victim managed to kick the man off of her, and run to her parent’s bedroom for help.

Her attacker then fled the house.

“A stranger sexual assault in a residence is not a common occurrence,” says S/Sgt. Beverly Voros from the Calgary Police Service. “I know I was here last week saying that stranger sexuals do not happen that often in Calgary, and this is a second one…[but] this is a different [motive] and I stand by my words this is not a common occurrence in Calgary.”

Voros is urging people to take precautions against intruders.

“Alarms work really well. You can set an alarm when you are sleeping so if windows or doors are cracked open the alarm will go off and wake you up in the middle of the night.

The suspect in the Braeside case is described as 5’8” tall with a medium build. At the time of the assault, he was wearing a dark-coloured hoodie and the victim said he smelled strongly of cigarette smoke.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call police at 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers.
