REGINA – The details still need to be worked out, but Regina’s new football stadium could include more local and unique food vendors in addition to the traditional burger and fries.
Evraz Place, who’s responsible for the concessions, said it’s leaning towards more home-grown options to supplement familiar favourites.
“I think our goal will probably be to create a significant local flavour as oppose to the chain,” said CEO of Evraz Place, Mark Allan. “A trend in the sport and entertainment business is they’re looking for a great perogie or a great pulled pork sandwich or something that’s known in the community.”
Smokin’ Okies already sells its barbecue-style food at Mosaic and it’s hoping that agreement continues.
“I’m hoping that they are going to see us there. We really enjoy our relationship with the Riders and the stadium,” said Eric Johnson, owner of Smokin’ Okies. “It’s great to have the local independents there to service all of the Rider fans.”
A few years ago, Ukrainian food from Peg’s Kitchen was also available and owner Peg Leippi said she’s interested in coming back: “People are looking for something different, not just run of the mill. They’re looking for something tasty. Comfort food.”
Many of the details are still being worked out but that’s not stopping the local food circle from buzzing. Jack Keaton’s BBQ & Grill is also interested in being involved.
“Local food vendors are what make Regina unique and great. We are in the community. We’re working in the community. It’s people that you interact with on a daily basis,” said Kristi Huber.
