Gwar rocker David Brockie died of heroin overdose

TORONTO — A medical examiner’s office in Virginia has determined that Ottawa-born David Brockie, frontman for heavy metal band Gwar, died of an accidental heroin overdose.

Brockie, who performed as Oderus Urungus, was found in his Richmond home on March 23. He was 50.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the chief medical examiner’s office said Brockie’s death was caused by acute heroin toxicity.

Gwar, a satirical thrash metal band known for its grotesque live shows and obscene lyrics, has released 13 albums since 1984.

In 2011, guitarist Cory Smoot was found dead on the band’s tour bus. He was 34.
