EDMONTON – An unoccupied home in St. Albert suffered extensive damage after fire tore through the building Saturday evening.
Fire crews were called to the home around 5:40 p.m., as dark, black smoke was billowing into the air in the Lacombe Park area.
The house was located just 500-feet from a local fire station.
“It was coming in just about when shift change was, so the firefighters that were coming on duty could see the column of smoke as they were coming into the station. So we were actually getting ready to come over here before the fire was actually called in,” says Acting Platoon Chief Charles Tye with the St. Albert Fire Department.
When crews arrived, flames were coming from the roof and windows of the house. Tye says the wind played a factor in the fight, and crews worked to protect nearby homes.
No injuries were reported. At this time it’s not known what cause the blaze.
Damage is pegged at approximately $500,000.
