‘He will be greatly missed’: Loved ones mourn death of Lorne Miller

LETHBRIDGE- If you were lucky enough to meet Lorne Miller, you would have been struck by his kindness, big heart and humour.

That’s how Tim Carter, friend and coworker, describes the 45-year-old who passed away Sunday night.

“He was a friend to everyone he met. He was a super, super nice guy. A gentle guy, a funny guy, and a really regular guy.”

Miller worked as a cook at Average Joe’s Sports Bar and was well known in the community. He was severely injured in a hit-and-run late January, while riding his bike home from work along Stafford Drive North.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Miller spent months in a coma and fighting to recover in a Calgary hospital.

When his condition declined he was moved back to Lethbridge to spend his remaining days at a palliative care centre alongside family and friends.

“This is obviously a terrible time for them. I do know from all my dealings I’ve had with them they are wonderful people and they are very close, and that will help them through this,” Carter says.

He adds the outpouring of support for the family through sympathies, donations and fundraisers has been overwhelming.

While Miller’s fight has come to an end, the family man described as a “big teddy bear” leaves a lasting impression for everyone who knew him.

“He was just a wonderful, warm hearted, caring individual. I was really proud to have him as a friend and get to know him. He will be greatly missed by all of us.”

30-year-old Edward James Mikla faces charges in connection to the hit-and-run, but police say additional charges may be brought forward.

He is scheduled to be back in court May 14th.
