The design firm chosen to redevelop Edmonton’s City Centre Airport lands is providing a clearer picture of how they see the project coming together.
Vancouver-based Perkins + Will was selected to create a new, green community that will be home to upwards of 30-thousand people.
"It’s a fantastic opportunity for Edmonton to have urban infill and densification close to the downtown.," said Perkin + Will’s Peter Busby "The design is pedestrian-focussed, transit-oriented development.
Designers plan to create a carbon neutral community, one that respects the aviation history of the site.
"We’re certainly going to build on the theme of flight," Busby said. "(We plan to keep) the runways, the main hangars, the main heritage buildings that are there and weave them into the fabric of the redevelopment."
As the plans are developed, the company is promising to engage various stakeholders to ensure their concerns are addressed.
"We now need to engage citizens of the communities around the site, citizens of Edmonton, the politicians, the businesses, all the stakeholders like NAIT and the Glenrose," Busby said.
Detailed designs are expected to be complete by the summer of 2013.
