Premier Brad Wall has sent Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union (SGEU) President Bob Bymoen a letter, urging him to call off strike action or face the consequences.

On Tuesday, 470 Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) workers walked off the job to back their contract demands.

Wall has asked Bymoen to call off the strike “until all claims for unseeded and flooded out acres are processed.”

“If I do not receive your assurance that this strike will end within 24 hours, action will be taken to protect the interests of the province and of flood victims.”

There is no word from the Premier’s office on what that action will be.

Meanwhile, SGEU says striking workers in Estevan and Weyburn are volunteering to assist with local flood relief efforts.

“We are part of these communities, and with extreme weather conditions threatening homes and livelihoods, we want to lend a hand where we can,” said union spokesperson Alan Evans.

SGEU has not responded to Wall’s letter but say they are committed to returning to the negotiating table to hammer out a new agreement.

SCIC is offering a 5.5 per cent increase over three years while SGEU withdrew their last offer of 7.5 per cent over the same period.

Also on Wednesday, the government announced the crop insurance reporting deadline had been extended to June 30th due to the unprecedented flooding.
