TORONTO – Cinco de Mayo is being celebrated in the United States and Mexico on Monday.
Spanish for the “fifth of May,” Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican heritage and marks the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 – it is often mistakenly thought to be Mexico’s Independence Day, which is celebrated on Sept. 16.
Pet owners dressed their tiny dogs up for the annual “Run of the Chihuahuas” race in Washington on Saturday as part of Cinco de Mayo celebrations taking place across the United States and Mexico.
