Venezuelan anti-corruption official dies in Cuba after suffering a stroke

CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuela’s top anti-corruption official has died In Cuba where he was undergoing medical treatment.

Information Minister Andres Izarra on Monday posted a message on his Twitter account announcing the death of Comptroller General Clodosbaldo Russian, a close ally of President Hugo Chavez. Izarra did not provide the cause of death or other details.

Russian, 72, had travelled to Cuba in May for medical treatment after he suffered a stroke.

Opposition leaders have long accused Russian of singling out government opponents and unfairly barring hundreds of politicians from running in elections in recent years.

Russian denied any wrongoing, arguing Venezuelan law gave him the right to impose restrictions on potential candidates suspected of corruption.
