Sniff, swirl and sip for Special Olympics at Winnipeg Wine Festival

Thousands of Manitobans will take over the RBC Convention Centre for the 13th annual Winnipeg Wine Festival in support of Special Olympics.

The festival has grown to be one of the largest in the country, with nearly 10,000 people expected to tip their glasses over the three-day tasting event.

This has become the largest single fundraiser for Special Olympics Manitoba. The event raised roughly $450,000 for the charity in 2013.

The theme this year is Australia, but 130 different wineries from 13 countries around the world are participating.

Money raised through the event will go towards helping nearly 1,600 athletes in 134 different programs.

Ninety-three athletes will be heading to Vancouver in July to compete in the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games.
