Cost of being a wedding guest is increasing dramatically: survey

It’s not just the bride and groom who are stressed about the cost of a wedding.

A recent survey of 1,500 people in the United States by American Express found the cost of attending weddings as a guest has increased 75 per cent in just two years.

When you factor in things like pre-wedding parties, travel, hotel, clothing and gift, guests spend an average of $592 per wedding.

“So I would say $100 is a minimum and going up from there sky’s the limit. Very close people and family members can gift lots of money. Consider factors such as relationship, style of wedding, how long have you known these people – all of these things will come into play,” Alison McGill the editor-in-chief Weddingbells Magazine said.

Weddingbells Magazine’s annual survey found destination weddings are up 30 per cent compared to last year, and if your friends are getting hitched out of town, the same gift giving rules apply.

“If you’re committing to attending the wedding, absolutely you have to gift on top of that,” McGill said.
