CALGARY- Two grassfires sparked concern east of city limits on Tuesday evening, and forced the closure of a major highway.
The blazes broke out near Indus, which is in Rocky View County about six kilometres outside of Calgary. Emergency crews from Langdon and Chestermere rushed to the scene, and tried to control the flames.
The fire caused smoke to billow into the air, hampering visibility on Highway 22X. As a result, the roadway was shut down around 6:30 p.m.
One house near the scene was threatened, but fire crews staged a defence in hopes of saving it.
It’s believed the fire was sparked near some railway tracks.
