Saskatchewan’s oldest building gets restoration funding

STANLEY MISSION, Sask. – Saskatchewan’s oldest building, Holy Trinity Anglican Church located in Lac La Ronge Provincial Park, will continue to stand after receiving some recent renovations.

An inspection by staff in 2011 found it required critical repairs to the roof and foundation and recommended those upgrades be made a priority. A report deemed the repairs essential to the building’s preservation.

The provincial and federal governments step up with $330,000 in restoration funding.

“For more than 150 years, Holy Trinity Anglican Church has been a treasured place of worship and a significant heritage asset for our province,” said Kevin Doherty, minister of parks, culture and sport for Saskatchewan.

Holy Trinity Anglican Church is a provincial heritage property and national historic site located on the shore of the Churchill River.

“Our national historic sites are vital to our history, our identity as Canadians and our tourism industry,” said Leona Aglukkaq, Canada’s environment minister.

The church became part of Lac La Ronge Provincial Park in 1981 and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010.

Preservation of the church will continue and staff is currently evaluating priorities for 2014-15.
