Nerds and geeks descend on convention centre for Vancouver Fan Expo

Do not be surprised to see a super hero or an anime character lurking around downtown Vancouver this weekend.

The city is hosting third annual Fan Expo that brings together thousands of comic book and sci-fi enthusiasts from around the world.

They will be lining up to see their favourite stars, check out memorabilia and show off their costumes, a must-do of any fan convention.

Many come dressed in character: from Batman to Ghostbusters to Walking Dead characters.

There is a friendly competition to outdo each other, with some fans spending months and hundreds of dollars on their convention attire.

Some of the big guests this year include Harry Potter actor Tom Felton, Star Trek’s Karl Urban, and Pippin from the Lord of the Rings.

“It is a three-day celebration of all things pop culture,” says event organizer James Armstrong. “So whether you are into anime, comic books, science fiction, horror movies, video games, it is all here this weekend.”

Rows of T-shirts, figurines, rare comic books and movie posters are all for sale at the expo.

Around 25,000 people are expected to attend.

And although its geared to all ages, the vast majority are adults.

Armstrong says these are not just fans, but avid collectors, who are proud of their prized possessions.

“Their collections would be right in the front of their house with big halogen lights on them. These are the people who are very proud of what they are into,” he says.
