Edmonton Catholic Schools have released their proposed budget for the upcoming school year, which calls for teacher layoffs.

The 2011/2012 budget calls for 97 teachers to be laid off, as well as 63 support staff and 24 janitors.

There is speculation that if part time teaching positions are cut, the numbers could be even higher than 97 teaching jobs cut.

Of the 63 support staff, the majority of the cuts will likely be to special education programs.

The board is predicting an operating deficit of $1.8 million.

Board member Debbie Engel says students will suffer as a result.

"To say there will be no impact on class size is impossible because we’re going to have less teachers and more students."

The final budget will be released later this month.

The Catholic Board released their proposed budget almost one month after the Edmonton Public School Board released a proposed budget that calls for 229 teachers to be laid off, and 115 non-teaching positions to be cut.

Province wide, the Alberta Teacher’s Association claims there will be approximately 1,200 teaching positions cut in the upcoming school year.
