WINNIPEG – The hockey season is not over for two members of the Winnipeg Jets.
Highly touted rookie defenceman Jacob Trouba and goalie prospect Connor Helleybuyck will join team USA for next month’s World Hockey Championship in Minsk, Belarus.
Trouba won a bronze medal with the Americans during last year’s tournament. This past season, the 20-year-old’s first in the NHL, Trouba scored 10 goals and 19 assists in 65 games. He also led all rookies in ice time, averaging 22:16 per game.
Connor Hellebuyck spent the 2013-2014 season with the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and posted an 18-9-2 record along with a 1.79 goals against average. Last week, the 20-year-old was named the inaugural winner of the Mike Richter award as the top goalie in the NCAA. Hellebuyck was a fifth round pick of the Jets in the 2012 NHL entry draft.
The United States open the World Hockey Championship May 9 with a game against host Belarus. Canada faces France that same day. A champion will be crowned May 25.
