LANGLEY – A warning for people looking for a place to rent on Craigslist after a Langley family was allegedly swindled in a rental scam.
The Deseno family, including three children, were searching for a new place to rent in Surrey. Like countless other people, they decided to turn to Craigslist to find a new home.
They found a place and even arranged to go see it.
A woman claiming to own the place showed them around and made another appointment to take their down payment.
Only after they handed over their cheque did the Desenos realize they’d been scammed.
“After we paid her the deposit, we were having a really hard time getting a hold of her to do the rental agreement,” says Samantha Deseno.
“We went there today to go and just see if somebody might be there who we can talk to, and there was a security guard outside who said nobody is allowed on the property. Obviously we got worried, so we went to the City Hall and found out that the woman that we have paid the deposit to is not even the owner. When we called the actual owner, the first thing he said to [us] is she is a fraud.”
The Desenos say they have until the end of the week to move out of their old place.
