SaskPower has awarded a contract to Stantec Consulting for a carbon capture project.
The project at Boundary Dam is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a million tonnes per year, the equivalent of taking a quarter of a million vehicles off the road.
The $1.24 billion project is a commercial-scale carbon capture and storage facility and should be fully up and running by 2014.
Stantec’s award is worth about $30 million.
Stantec will be doing design work, as well as ensuring work done by other contractors is up to standard.
The process traps waste gases such as carbon dioxide rather than allowing them to enter the atmosphere.
