KELOWNA — A Transportation Association of Canada report shows Kelowna is the most car dependent city in Canada, with the highest car ownership per capita in the country.
The Okanagan car share co-op is hoping to expand it’s reach in the city, and offer an alternative to those who choose not to own a vehicle, but need to use one now and then.
“I commute mostly with my bike or the bus,” says Danielle Prins, an OGO car share member, “it’s great for when I need to do a huge grocery shop, or, next week I’m going to be transferring some of my planter boxes over to my friends house so I can use the truck.”
Right now, there are three cars in the co-op, but the executive director would like to see that number increase to seven or eight over the next year.
OGO car share is trying to drum up interest in the area of Landmark Centre, UBC Okanagan, and Okanagan College.
“Once we have 2 or 3 businesses and a couple of individual members, we actually can bring in a car,” explains
Christian Brandt, Executive Director of the co-op.
Different plans are available, depending on how frequently users take advantage of the program. Casual members pay 25 dollars a month, and then four dollars an hour and 40 cents a kilometer for each use. Reservations are made online.
