Man saves enough Canadian Tire cash to buy riding mower

EDMONTON – It’s as Canadian as the beaver or maple syrup. And Canadian Tire Money is practically an institution in our country, but still, many people don’t see the practical use of it. However, one Edmonton man certainly does.

Brian McPherson started collecting Canadian Tire Money when he was just 14 after buying a hockey stick. Fifteen years later, he decided to cash it all in, showing up Wednesday evening at a Canadian Tire store carrying $1,053 worth of the retailer’s currency. He bought himself a brand new riding lawn mower.

McPherson says he’s at Canadian Tire "all the time. I buy gas, I buy home repair stuff, I buy absolutely everything they sell that you can buy here. I come here and get it. It was probably, I guess, around $20,000 to come up with the money for this thing."

Their yard isn’t even big enough to warrant a riding lawn mower, according to McPherson’s wife.

McPherson received $4.90 back in Canadian Tire Money, and says he hasn’t decided what he’ll be saving for next.

It’s estimated he would have spent approximately $262,500 in order to get $1,053 worth of Canadian Tire Money.
