A 25-year-old Surrey man has been arrested and charged for a vicious and unprovoked attack on a Coast Mountain bus driver.

On March 26 at about 8 p.m., the man and a woman were waiting for the 341 bus to Guildford. The man was reportedly outside having a cigarette when the bus driver told the duo it was time for the bus to leave.

That’s when the man boarded the bus and about six blocks later punched the driver, breaking his nose. The bus was travelling at about 30 kmph and pulling into the left turn lane at 144 Street at the time of the assault, however the driver was able to bring the bus to a stop and open the doors, allowing the man to leave.

The bus did not have any cameras on board, but an investigation launched by the Metro Vancouver Transit Police Crime Reduction Unit led to the identification of a suspect.

Sean Tyler Quaye was arrested by Transit Police on April 2 in a stolen car in the Newton area. He has been charged with driving while prohibited and assault causing bodily harm.

Quaye is well known to police, especially for violent incidents, and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Friday April 11 in Surrey.

Translink says numerous witnesses praised the bus operator for his actions under such difficult circumstances and told investigators that he was more concerned for the safety and wellbeing of his passengers than for his own safety.

Aside from the broken nose, the driver suffered broken bones in his face, continuing vision impairment in one eye and loosened teeth.

Investigators would still like to speak to the 30 passengers on the bus at the time of the attack. Passengers are asked to call Transit Police at 604-515-8300.
