WATCH: Summerland ALR misinformation

SUMMERLAND– Summerland residents crowded into Summerland Secondary School Monday evening for a town hall meeting on a  familiar topic.

A controversial land swap proposal that would see more than 80 hectares of prime farming land near downtown Summerland removed from the ALR, replaced with 90 hectares of lesser quality land farther out of town.

It’s a proposal that’s prompted many strong opinions, the most vocal speaking out against the plan.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Monday’s town hall meeting was an opportunity for Summerland council to provide residents with more information and clear up what the mayor calls some mis-information about things like land quality and housing numbers.

Just one councilor voiced clear opposition to the plan.

Residents in attendance were not given a chance to speak but were able to submit written questions to council.

Most of the people who spoke to Global News after the presentations said that what they heard did not change where they stood on the issue.

This town hall meeting was called in advance of a second public hearing on the land swap.

It’s necessary, because people had to be turned away from the first public hearing because the meeting room was at capacity.

The next public hearing will take place at Summerland Secondary School later this month.
