Hydro tower collapses in Surrey

More than 20,000 residents are without power in Metro Vancouver after a massive power failure.

There are reports at least one hydro tower has collapsed in the area, toppling into the Fraser River.

According to the B.C. Hydro website, the power outage occurred just after 8:30 p.m.

Downed wire is the cause for the outage for about 17,000 homes in Surrey, and some in New Westminster, while a windstorm knocked power out to another 3,000 homes.

B.C. Hydro has not been available for comment. It is not yet known when power will be restored.

The outage has halted elevator and escalator service at Scott Road and Gateway SkyTrain stations, said TransLink.

TransLink said it will fall back on generators, but customers with disabilities should call for assistance on the red phone.

Surrey Central is not affected.
