HILLSBOROUGH, NB – Thirteen-year-old Colton Steeves of small-town Hillsborough, New Brunswick has been crowned the Maritime yo-yo champion.
And now he’s headed to prove his skills on the national stage in Vancouver.
Steeves told Global News in an interview that his interest started when he got his first yo-yo for Christmas a few years ago. Now he knows over 40 different tricks.
“I practice like two hours a day combined,” Steeves said. “There’s so many cool tricks to do.”
His mother Kelly said she had no idea yo-yo competitions even existed.
“I really thought yo-yoing was pretty simple. You go up and down and walk the dog and that was it. I did not realize there is this whole other world,” she said.
Steeves’ attributes the inspiration behind his talent to his former teacher, Bryan Ouellette, who judges some competitions.
“When we judge a routine like that it’s based on string touches, on how they combo into one another. So it’s not just presentation,” Ouellette said.
Steeves apparently has it all: skill and style. But the talent has lead to $800 worth of yo-yos and some scratches on Steeves’ bedroom ceiling.
But Kelly is embracing her son’s skill.
“I look at the scratches and I think I am just going to enjoy them. It’s one of those things you want to keep because it reminds you of them,” she said.
Steeves hopes his skill will put in him the running for first place at the Nationals in Vancouver in August.
