TORONTO – The U.S. National Weather Service has issued tornado watches across southeastern Alabama, the Florida panhandle, southern and central Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina as severe storms move across the states.

Monday afternoon a tornado warning was issued for Oscilla, Ga. as radar indicated the formation of a tornado from a severe storm.

Though the start of the year has been relatively quiet in terms of tornadoes, as the spring weather brings warmer temperatures, more active weather is picking up, particularly in the south and midwest.

During the month of March, there were 25 reported tornadoes in the U.S. As of Monday, there had already been 11 reports of twisters throughout the U.S. this month.

But it’s not just the tornadoes that are the issue: last week areas of Missouri experienced severe flooding due to severe storms.

The U.S. receives around 1,200 to 1,300 tornadoes each year, with the most active months being April to about June. In Canada, there are on average just 50 to 60 tornadoes annually.
