HALIFAX – Nurses in Halifax have been ordered to go to work after some of them refused to in defiance of proposed essential services legislation.

The Nova Scotia Labour Board issued a cease-and-desist order after some nurses did not report for their shifts yesterday.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

Union president Joan Jessome says the union advised its members to obey the order.

She says the nurses will still be in a legal strike position as of 12:01 a.m. Thursday.

Jessome says plans are for the membership to walk out, but she says the strike could be brief depending on how long it will take essential services legislation to make it through the legislature.

Government house leader Michel Samson says the legislation likely won’t pass until Friday.

Jessome says to ensure safety, picket lines won’t be in place until the 7 a.m. shift change.
