Microburst, not tornado hits city of Cold Lake

The city of Cold Lake was hit by an intense storm on Sunday night, leaving some wondering if a tornado had blown through. Experts have now confirmed that it was not a tornado, but a very intense down draft of air known as a microburst.

It may not have been a tornado, but the storm still caused damage as it blew through the region.

“Cold Lake Fire-Rescue received a call after a tree fell on a power line causing a small fire in Cold Lake South just after 6:00 pm last night,” Director of Emergency Management/Fire Chief Jeff Fallow said. “Fire crews monitored the area of the downed power line until the scene was made safe by ATCO Electric. Fire crews also investigated and monitored other downed power, cable and telephone lines in the surrounding area.”

The city believes the storm impacted an eight block radius in the city, encompassing about 100 homes.

Trees in the area of 47th Avenue to 54th Avenue between 57th Street and 59th Street in Cold Lake South were uprooted and blown over the road, some landing on vehicles and homes.

There have also been reports of hail damage to vehicles.

While the storm caused damage to property, it certainly could have been worse.

“As of this morning, no injuries have been reported,” Fallow said. “Fire crews went around the neighbourhood checking on residents in their homes, some had self-evacuated before crews arrived.”

Residents are asked to contact their insurance companies to report damages.
