The government of Alberta is preparing to launch an updated version of the current Emergency Public Warning System that will provide emergency updates to Albertans digitally as in addition to making use of the traditional broadcast methods that are currently used.
The new system, called the Alberta Emergency Alert will send emergency alerts online, through radio and television and through social media.
Over the summer, the province will provide training to those who will be sending alerts through the new system.
“As we transition, Albertans should know that emergency alerts will be issued on both the old system and the new system this summer and into the fall,” said Hector Goudreau, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “If you hear either an Alberta Emergency Alert or an Emergency Public Warning System alert, listen to the instructions and respond appropriately.”
The Alberta Emergency Alert system is scheduled to officially launch in the fall of 2011.
Additional informaion, including how Albertans can sign up for updates from the new system, is expected to be released in the upcoming weeks.
The current Emergency Public Warning System has been in place since 1992.
