The man facing charges in a five year old murder case appeared in court for the first time on Friday morning.

Earlier this week, police charged Cleophas (Cliff) Decoine-Zuniga with manslaughter in the death of Dylan McGillis.

McGillis and a friend were leaving a Whyte Avenue area bar on November 19, 2006 when they were approached by a group of men.

An altercation occured, and McGillis was fatally stabbed.

Decoine-Zuniga’s court appearance on Friday morning was brief, but for the members of McGillis’s family who were present, it was a painful experience.

The family has been waiting for years for new information about the case. They sat in the gallery, wearing buttons with Dylan’s face on them, waiting to see the person facing charges in Dylan’s death.

"I jumped up, I guess maybe in court I shouldn’t have." McGillis’s grandmother said outside of court. "What my family has gone through, it’s unbelieveable."

Police believe there may have been other people involved in the death of McGillis, so the family knows that the court process could be a long one.
