Weak start for average weekly earnings in Saskatchewan

OTTAWA – Average weekly earnings in Saskatchewan were down slightly to kick off 2014, according to a report released by Statistics Canada on Monday.

On a month-over-month basis, Saskatchewan earnings decreased by $8.42 or nearly one per cent in January.

Canadian average earnings remained virtually unchanged at $924.77 compared to December 2013.

Saskatchewan weekly wages were at $953.92 in January, the third highest province behind Alberta and Newfoundland.

There was a 3.5 per cent increase in Saskatchewan earnings in January 2014 compared to the previous year’s month.

“Our strong economy allows employers to pass on the benefits in terms of higher compensation and that is an asset when it comes to attracting new workers to the province,” said Tim McMillan, Saskatchewan’s energy and resources minister.

Nationally, earnings increased 3 per cent on a year-over-year basis.

The number of Saskatchewan employees in January 2014 grew by 1.8 per cent compared to January 2013.
