JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The United Nations says more and better trained midwives could help save millions of lives in many countries with high death rates among newborns and women giving birth.

Vincent Fauveau, who co-ordinated a new U.N. study of midwife services in 58 countries around the world, said Monday that midwives "can do much more than deliver babies. They can deliver health services."

The study and new recommendations for training and licensing midwives were released at an international midwives conference in the coastal South African city of Durban Monday.

The study’s recommendations were endorsed by dozens of aid, development and educational institutions, including USAID, Save the Children and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
