Airport parking customer finds car damaged, fights to get it fixed

TORONTO – An Oshawa woman was left without a door handle on her car after picking up her car from a park and fly lot.

Nikki Henderson dropped off her car at a Park ‘N Fly valet lot on February 28. She returned from Mexico on March 7 and said she noticed odd behaviour from the valet driver.

“So we started putting our luggage in, the gentleman got out, the valet driver and he just kind of slithered by us and didn’t say a word,” she said. “My aunt and I found that a bit peculiar because you see two women struggling to put luggage in, wouldn’t you stop?”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

She drove her aunt home then tried to open her door to get out. The door handle was gone. She looked and found it in the panel on the driver’s side door.

“I put my hand in the panel door and it was placed in there,” she said. “So whoever had ripped it off had obviously placed it on purpose in the door compartment.”

She called the manager, who she said was helpful. He offered to investigate and asked for quotes from mechanics and pictures.

But on Sunday, she got a letter saying they wouldn’t be paying for it. The letter purportedly said the company wouldn’t pay for “normal wear and tear on handles.”

But when Global News reporter Sean O’Shea called the company, he got a different story. Brent Ford, the general manager of Park ‘N Fly said the duty manager made a simple mistake and the company always intended to pay for the broken handle.

“Unfortunately, he made a clerical error and mixed up two files,” Ford said in an interview Thursday. “IT was a mistake and it’s going to be rectified since you brought it to our attention.”

“They expect us to treat their vehicle like we would treat our own vehicle,” he added.
